A team of colleagues from Active Cheshire, Chester Cycling Campaign, Chester Resident Associations Group, Chester Sustainability Forum, the University of Chester, and Living Streets are working with Cheshire West and Chester Council to deliver Chester’s first Active Travel Festival on Sunday 18th June 2023.
By Active Travel we mean Cycling, Walking, or Wheeling (scooters, wheelchairs, adapted bikes and scooters, …). We are not against cars and we all drive them as required, but we do want to positively encourage local residents to think about using Active Travel options to get into and through Chester, for those journeys of 1-3 miles. Active Travel infrastructure in Chester has its problems but the City is far more accessible than most people realise and any form of active travel has the recognised benefits of improving health and well-being and helping the environment.
We plan to have attractions in the City centre which will be informative, entertaining and fun. But we will also help participants to find the best routes into the City and thus make their trip part of the enjoyment and learning experience. We will gather data on the barriers and enablers that influence travel choices in order to help make Active Travel a more attractive option.
In order to finance this event we have made an application to SpaceHive’s current crowdfunding scheme in association with CW&C, which has been launched at the start of November. To ensure our application is a success we need not only to attract donations but also to demonstrate community support for this event.
At this stage demonstrating community support is more important to us. Thus we are looking for donations of £2-£5 from as many local residents as we can. Our target is to get 1000 positive responses!
I really hope you would be willing to make a small donation via the web link below. This link will also give you lots more detail about our proposed event: https://www.spacehive.com/atfestchester
