Part of a series of interviews with Members of the Chester Business Club
The members of Chester Business Club are business leaders from a wide range of sectors and professions. Here is another in our series of “Member Spotlight” interviews with Club members, this time with Chris Rhodes, Commercial Director at Lovelock Mitchell Architects.
Q: Chris, tell us a little about yourself and your journey to LMA.
I joined LMA in 2017 after a career in engineering and project management starting as a junior draughtsman with Curtins, then Arup, Gifford, and Ramboll. I’ve worked across and been based in Mold, Wrexham, Chester, and beyond, and it’s rewarding to see buildings I’ve contributed to still shaping and serving our local communities. At LMA, I wanted to combine that technical experience with architecture and play my part in helping preserve the incredible legacy of Thomas Meakin Lockwood.
Q: LMA has an extraordinary heritage. Can you share more about that?
Absolutely. LMA is the fourth oldest architectural practice in England and the eighth oldest in the world, dating back to 1860. Our founder, Thomas Lockwood, was a prolific Victorian architect whose work defined Chester’s identity. Over 165 years, the practice has evolved but always stayed true to creating great spaces and places. Even today, Lockwood’s name pops up around Chester—there’s even a bar named after him in the new market!
Q: How has the practice adapted to modern times while honoring its roots?
In 2019, we transitioned to an Employee Owned Trust, which ensures independence and longevity. This model allows us to share success across the team and stay consultative, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that’s been part of the business since day one.
Q: What does your role as Commercial Director involve?
My role is about balancing business strategy with client relationships and project delivery, but it’s about creating a safe place where my colleagues can thrive. It’s about making sure we remain commercially strong while upholding design excellence, our values and that we continue to respect our heritage.
Q: Outside of work, what keeps you busy?
Life is full! I’m married to Vanessa, who is Executive Director of People and Culture at Reaseheath College. I also serve as a magistrate on the Cheshire and Merseyside Bench. Our dependents have flown the nest, but they return often—so the house is never quiet! I’m also keen to engage more with the Chester Business Club, though finding time is always a challenge.
Q: What’s your vision for Chester and your role in the community?
Chester is a city with a unique blend of heritage and opportunity. I want to see it thrive as a place that respects its architectural legacy while embracing sustainable growth and innovation. At LMA we love to contribute to projects that enhance public spaces, support local businesses, and create environments where people want to live and work. Personally, being part of the Chester Business Club and serving as a magistrate allows me to stay connected and give back to the community. It’s about fostering collaboration between civic bodies, businesses, and residents to ensure Chester remains vibrant and inclusive for generations to come.
Q: Looking ahead, what excites you most about LMA’s future?
Continuing to blend heritage with innovation. Architecture is about shaping environments that matter—places that respect history while meeting modern needs. With our employee-owned model and talented team, I’m confident LMA will thrive for another 165 years.
Q: Final question, Chris! Why do you think the Chester Business Club benefits its members and our beloved City?
I see the Chester Business Club as a “business voice” in Chester, combining business leadership with philanthropy with advocacy of the City. It’s really well placed to contribute to and strengthen the local economy, supports countless charitable causes one way or another, and enhance Chester’s profile as a city that values collaboration and social responsibility. And it’s great way to socialise in Chester!
