The Pets At Home business set up its first shop – in Chester! – in 1991 and has grown to be the pet-related industry’s market leader with 450 stores nationwide with a market value close to £1billion.
Liverpudlian Peter Pritchard, a career retailer, took over as CEO in 2018 and has overseen the business’s development as a one-stop shop for pet food, toys, equipment and insurance, plus small animals, fish and reptiles, as well as vet clinics and grooming areas. It has 700,000 customers who pay £4 a month for repeat treatments for their pets – and there are even in-store dog birthday parties!
He follows in the footsteps of other leading retailers who have spoken at Club events – including John Timpson (Timpson Group), Jim McCarthy (Poundland), Andy Street ( John Lewis Partnership) but his message to other High Street operators, in the current worrying retail climate, is to ‘Stop bleating and start reinventing’.
